The JEE fever has fully struck each 12th grader and their parents. With the announcement of JEE Main 2019 (January session) and a limited time left for the April session, search for the last month JEE preparation tips has already started. Here are a few tips to prepare for JEE Main 2019 in one month for students who have completed some (hopefully the important) topics, and are panicking a teensy bit about completing it all on time. We got you covered.
Note: The division of chapters on the basis of difficult/easy/what-to-leave-for-the-end is not universal. You will need to know your strengths and weaknesses and where you stand on the preparation scale. The following pointers are simply to give you a basic structure of how you can proceed in the last crucial month of preparation.
Follow the Pomodoro technique
The Pomodoro technique is perfect for those who get easily distracted or can’t sit studying for hours on end at a desk.
The technique is simple: you pick a task (preparing for JEE ‘19 here) and you set a timer for 25 minutes. During those 25 minutes, you study and do nothing else. No phone, no email, no answering calls. Those 25 minutes are for focused study. If another task comes to write, note it down so you remember it for later.
After the timer goes off, take a 5 or 7-minute break. Return to the desk after those minutes for a 25-minute studying session again.
After 4 such 25-minute sessions, take a longer break. For 20/30 minutes. Make sure to do something which really refreshes your mind like going for a walk, dancing, or a 5-minute yoga routine.
Have the important stuff at your fingertips
Whether in conversations with friends and teachers or while solving previous year papers yourself, you must have noticed the topics which have a 100% (or near to that) chance of being asked. Make sure you do not leave these out. And when you study for them, make sure they are at your fingertips.
This means that no matter the difficulty level of the question or the way in which it is asked, you are able to answer it correctly. These will ensure that you keep on accumulating 4 marks for every right answer in one smooth streak.
Here is a list of the most important chapters which would not require much effort:
Physics | Chemistry | Mathematics |
Oscillations | Aromatic compounds |
Probability distribution
|
Photoelectric effect | Alkyl halides | Circle |
Wave Optics | Coordination compounds | Straight line |
Gravitation | D-block elements |
Sequence and series
|
Semiconductors | Chemical bonding |
Determinant and matrices
|
Electromagnetic waves | Nuclear and surface chemistry | Vectors |
Ray optics | Chemical kinetics | 3D geometry |
Heat and thermodynamics | Electrochemistry
Error and instrument analysis |
Gaseous and liquid structure
|
|
Atomic structure |
Chapters where there will be sweat, blood, and tears, but which cannot be left are these:
Physics | Chemistry | Maths |
Waves and sound | Carboxylic acid and its derivatives | Quadratic equation |
Bohr’s atomic model | Aldehydes and ketones | Complex number |
Magnetic effects of current and magnetism | Isomerism | Conic sections |
Properties of Matter | General organic chemistry | Application of derivatives |
Current, electricity and capacitors | P-block elements | Functions |
Electrostatics | Thermodynamics | Limits, continuity, and differentiability |
Kinematics | Definite integral and area under the curve
Rotation | ||
Electromagnetic induction and AC |
You need to have all of these chapters, their concepts, and any corresponding formulas/equations on your fingertips.
Know what you can avoid
This might seem like strange advice, but knowing what you can bypass during your last minute prep is as important as knowing what you cannot miss. These are chapters in each subject which require considerable effort but do not carry much weightage. Leave these for the end after all the other chapters have been done. If you are well-versed in any of them beforehand, then that’s great. If you just want a quick revision of these chapters, you can simply watch some recorded video lectures as it is easier and quicker to learn from videos.
Physics:
- Laws of motions
- Communication systems
- Center of mass and collisions
- Circular motion
Chemistry:
- Biomolecules and Polymers
- Nitrogen compounds and aliphatic compounds

Do the easy chapters along with the important ones
While you are revising or even going through one of the important chapters, switch to an easy one if you just can’t read through its concepts anymore. Also, the quickness with which you solve the questions will give you confidence and refresh you to study the tougher concepts with more zeal.
Physics:
- Dual nature of matter and radiation
- Units and measurements
- Work, energy, and power
- Nuclear physics and x-rays
- Fluids

- Redox and volumetric analysis
- Chemical equilibrium
Maths:
- Height and distance
- Set and relations
- Mathematical logic
- Statistics
- Trigonometric equation
- Differential equation
- Differentiation
Test yourself relentlessly
Every other day or so, test yourself with online mock tests or previous year papers. This is an invaluable tool to gauge how fruitful your preparation really is. You’ll also be able to pinpoint where you still need more practice and which concepts you are having trouble with – and then adjust your preparation as needed.
Surrender your phone
For one month. That’s it. Get off Instagram, Facebook, and any other social media channel you can do without. In the long run, you will be thankful.
Your main aim is to score as well as possible and for this, you need to prepare smartly. Be flexible, but also work hard. JEE might be tough, but armed with your study plan, so are you. Good luck, folks!
