JEE Main 2018 Paper Pattern
The JEE Main 2018 exam was a three hour long exam. The online exam will be held on the 15th and 16th April. The offline exam had a total of 90 questions worth 4 marks each. It consisted of 3 sections Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each section had equal weightage that is each section consisted of 30 questions worth 120 marks. All the questions were objective, multiple choice questions. The JEE Exam has negative marking also, so a wrong answer results in a deduction of 1 mark. Questions that have not been attempted do not face negative marking.
Chemistry
Chemistry was moderately easy amongst all the three sections. Almost equal weightage of Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry was there. The questions were a mix of theory and calculations, which ensured that students saved time for the other two sections. This section was quite lengthy in comparison to the other sections. There were around 14 questions asked from the 12th standard syllabus and 16 questions from the 11th standard syllabus. This section had 3 difficult questions, 17 moderate questions, and 10 easy questions. Initial assessment suspect’s students may find 2 options of Q.63 Set B could be correct, however, we think the answer should be option 1. This was a question of Alcohol phenol and ether, on a reaction of Phenol. No question was asked from the topics of Structure of atom, d & f block, Aldehyde Ketone, sblock, Polymer & Surface Chemistry. Overall the paper was balanced and a mixture of conceptual and numerical questions.
Here is the breakup of chapters which had the toughest and the easiest questions:
Tough Questions (Standard 12 only) | Easy Questions Standard 11 | Easy Questions Standard 11 |
Alcohols | Chemical Bonding | Biomolecules |
Phenols and Ethers | Chemical Thermodynamics | Chemistry in Everyday Life |
Coordination compounds | Hydrocarbons | Electrochemistry |
P-block Elements | Solid state solutions | |
Purification & Characteristics of Organic Compounds |
This is the breakup of marks between different topics of Chemistry section:
Topics | Marks Allotted |
Organic Chemistry | 44 |
Inorganic Chemistry | 28 |
Physical Chemistry | 48 |
Conclusion
Overall the JEE (Main) 2018 was slightly on the difficult side. A few questions in the paper were straightforward and could be solved by all those who prepared for the paper sincerely. But a large number of questions required lengthy solutions. Overall, in the Chemistry section the questions were slightly on easier this side.
